Afra & Tobia Scarpa "Artona" dining table for Maxalto, walnut burl wood, Italy, 1977. This dining table is part of the "Artona" collection, crafted with exceptional quality by Maxalto, the luxury division of B&B Italia. The base consists of two rectangular blocks made from black lacquered wood, adorned with brass accents. The tabletop features rounded edges and the distinctive dynamic lines that define the 'Artona' series. The walnut burl wood displays a striking and expressive grain, with prominent knots and a rich variety of tones. The 'Artona' collection was the first line produced by Maxalto, established in 1975 as B&B Italia's high-end division dedicated to handcrafted wooden furniture. The "Artona" design was created as a response to the widespread use of plastic in post-war furniture, emphasizing a return to traditional craftsmanship.
